Let's Get Weird. A Christian Take on UFO Phenomena
I'm going to make some predictions about UFOs and UAPs, and help you figure out what Christians should make of it.
I’m mildly under the conviction that Christians - especially those who want to impact culture - should be talking about what the culture is talking about. This was the whole concept behind using the “news” to discuss polemical theology, which was perhaps the most righteous bait-and-switch ever contrived in the Internet era. People came to Pulpit & Pen or Protestia for the news, and stayed for the gospel.
But Christians are largely not talking about what culture is talking about, because there’s a nifty little scandal out there about whether or not the Crusades in the year 1096 was morally justified. We get caught up beating dead horses to be of much use. Hey, did I mention that Pastor So-and-So disagreed with Francis Turretin? Did you know Deitrich Bonhoeffer was gay? Let me tell you what I think about the Doctrine of Angels Dancing on Pins and Needles.
Anyway, a topic that is everywhere as of late (except the evangelical blogosphere) is that of UFOs or, as they’re being called now, Unidentified Arial Phenomenon (UAPs). Perhaps it’s unseemly for a clerical-collared hoity-toity to prostrate himself to discuss what the neanderthals are talking about, but we evangelicals ought to maybe have discussions with people outside our bubble once in a while.
Consider the headlines lately.
So many sightings of unexplained gadgets and doodads in the air have UFOs being discussed in federal hearings, and legislators everywhere are admitting it’s happening.
Old footage of UAPs are coming out to the public, which have been largely suppressed in years previously.
Pilots are coming out of the woodwork with their testimonies and videos, especially over rural areas like Wisconsin, of all places.
Police Officers and others in positions of public trust are posting their videos, which basically nobody can explain.
In fact, 757 new reports have been made to the Pentagon of UAPs in the last calendar year.
Granted, some of these things, like what was reported recently flying over New Jersey, appear to be the size and functionality of drone aircraft. But some are engaging in legitimately unexplained flight capabilities currently unknown to the public…or rocket scientists, aircraft engineers, or the U.S. military.
So what are Christians to make of this? Can we fit “intelligent life from another planet” into our Biblical worldview? What if, just on the off-chance such life forms do exist, are we Christians going to say about it? Will it change our views? Our religion? Our understanding of God? Or are there alternative explanations, perhaps cutting-edge technologies, that are flying above us? And if so, what else has been hidden from us?
Well, buckle up. Let’s get weird with it.
